River of Life
The river was a life-line for those who lived along its shores. It provided village sites, food, trade and social contact.
Villages
The second interpretive sign is located at the edge of a village that was known as Q'UMK'UTS (Koomkoots). The village burned and has been rebuilt as part of today's larger village.Early communities typically stretched along the shore with a row of houses facing the river and a cemetary located at each end, as is the case here.
To locate signs 2,3 and 4, head north along the road to the river shore. Pass the totem poles at the Nuxalk Band Office and the Emmanuel United Church and continue to the end of the road.
