What does the Regional District Do?

Everything that the Regional District does can fit into one of three "pigeon holes." The first category is to provide services such as fire protection, water systems and street lighting to residents in the rural areas. These services are generally confined to small geographic areas.

The second category is to provide services to a larger geographic area where it doesn't make sense to duplicate that service for each area. Some examples are Land Use Planning, Economic Development, and regional Library services.

The third category the Board gets involved in is to try to influence the Federal or Provincial Government to do something differently or to stop doing something it is presently doing. Generally, these things are outside of the Regional District's area of responsibility but they are issues that affect the region. Recently the board has been involved in fisheries and forestry issues, and treaty negotiations, among other things.
