Bella Coola : River Guides & DriftingThe Atnarko and Bella Coola Rivers are classified as "Heritage Rivers of British Columbia". These ancient and magnificent watersheds are world famous for salmon fishing and have been used for thousands of years for food fishing and travel corridors.Alexander Mackenzie followed this same route 200 years ago while looking for a new route to the Pacific. If you care to experience these unique and ecologically diverse systems we offer you the following river rafting and drift boat guides If you are drifting the Bella Coola River during the months from June to September you will experience the river in glacial flour. Glacial flour is when the glaciers high in the mountains begin their melt and deposit glacial clay into the river. The Bella Coola comprises two river systems, the Atnarko, a warm river from the outlet of Charlotte Lake up high on the Chilcotin Plateau (try summer swimming at Smoke Hole) and the Talchako River which is heavily silted in the summer time by glacial melt. To experience the Atnarko and the Bella Coola in all their glory- a raft or a drift are definitely recommended. The Atnarko and Bella Coola are classified for non motorized boats only. Drift boats, rafting, canoe and kayak are recommended. Tubing does occur on the Atnarko. If you are taking a boat out on your own please check with local operators for conditions and hazards such as log jams and trouble spots.
