Bella Coola : Bears
Unfortunately every year, Black and Grizzly Bears have to be destroyed in the Bella Coola Valley because they have become accustomed to feeding on garbage and other attractants left behind by people. Ideas on how to avoid the needless destruction of these bears are as follows:
- Always place garbage in "bear proof" containers. These are found in campsites throughout the Valley.
- Never leave barbecues or coolers containing food outdoors. Always store them in the trunk of your car when not in use.
- While fishing, always clean the fish in the water, and discard fish entrails by throwing them into the river, in fast flowing water. Never leave fish or roe lying around. Place them in a cooler and store the cooler in your car.
- Finally, never approach a bear in the wild, and report any incidents of aggressive or abnormal bear behaviour to your local Conservation Officer in Bella Coola at
(250) 982-2606.
